Born in Helsinki, Finland, Laura grew up at the apron strings of her mother and grandmother, both accomplished and passionate cooks.

Laura enrolled to study Hotel and Restaurant Management after finishing school. Before commencing her studies, however, while on a modeling assignment in Milan, she was scouted by a South African model agent who offered her a contract to model in Cape Town. Not long after arriving in Cape Town, Laura met and married the love of her life, an environmental lawyer… and also fell in love with the beautiful Cape. An opportunity to buy a historic wine farm, Mountain Shadows, saw the Truter family move to the Cape Winelands and brought Laura back in touch with her true passion – cooking scrumptious food.

“The farm has a guesthouse and within hours of driving through the gates, I was in the kitchen preparing a three course dinner for eight hungry American guests waiting to be fed!” says Laura.

Her cuisine at Mountain Shadows has since gained quite a following. This also saw the establishment of her own, eponymous catering company – Laura Truter Catering – which has grown from catering for their guesthouse to large weddings and corporate functions. The Embassy of Finland is one of Laura’s clients for whom she recently created and prepared a South African menu, paired with fine local wines, on the occasion of the Finnish President’s Parliamentary visit to South Africa.

“I absolutely love what I do and am so fortunate to be able to do it in such an inspiring setting with the best produce, and fantastic local wines to pair with it.. Our lifestyle and climate in the Cape is a perfect match for Mediterranean cuisine and my menus and recipes have a strong Mediterranean influence although I do tend to bring in certain complimentary Scandinavian flavours and recipes which remain close to my heart and which I have a yearning to share. The focus on seasonality is as much present here as it is in Scandinavian cuisine. I also believe that your experiences and travels will always colour your cooking style and tastes though essential cookery basics and traditions should always underpin this sense of adventure!”

In 2011, Laura completed a patisserie diploma through Silwood Cookery School and she now prides herself on her range of exquisite cakes, pastries, confectionary and canapés. Laura is working on her first cooking book, based on her travels and life in the Cape Winelands
